QUALITIES OF THERMAL SPRING WATERS

CHLORINE-SODIUM-BICARBONATE-SULPHURIC-ALKALI (>40°C) HYPERTHERMAL WATERS

This is a type of water in which sodium, chlorine, sulphuric ion (SO4- -) and bicarbonate anion (HCO3-) prevail.

 

BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE

TERMOREGULATION:

Our body generally responds to heat following this order: the thermal stimulation of the skin and of thermoreceptors sends inputs to the thermoregulator cores of our central nervous system, from here other inputs are sent to our vascular system, to the sweat glands and to the muscles.
Perspiration is one of the most obviuos and efficient mechanisms for dispersing heat: evaporation demands calorific skin energy which is taken away from our body.

Sweat evaporation is inversely proportional to the level of humidity in a specific environment: the more humid it is, the more sweat will be produced and when the evaporation is obstructed the sweat will stay on your skin.
Pulmonary hyperventilation represents a valid solution to dispersing heat, both for the warming of the expired air and for the removal of vapour. There is also an effect on the musculature and on the bronchial mucous membrane. The heat, applied on the trunk or directly on the mucous membrane through air or hot water inhalations, produces the increase and the fluidification of the secretions, as well as the reduction in the musculature tone. Moreover, the heat, hastening the cellular biological enzyme processes, is able to intensify the fixing mechanisms and the organic defense capabilities.  

 

BLOOD FLOW INCREASE:

Arterial and capillary dilation provokes an active hyperemia, caused by both direct and reflex mechanisms. The cardiocirculatory system responds to different levels according to the extension of the body surface exposed to the heat.

Local administration entails arterial vasodilation and the increase of the capillary pressure and of the circulation speed; once the heat is gathered within the blood, it is then dispersed in the body. Exposure to generalized heat provokes vasodilation and increase in cardiac activity.

 

BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF THE CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND ANTIEDEMA ACTION:

There are many effects on the metabolism and on the cellular functions. The tissue metabolism increases and this causes the change of enzymatic reactions. The warming can also provoke an inflammatory response in the short period. Nonetheless, thermal heat is also used for its anti-inflammatory characteristics, especially to treat chronic inflammations and to prevent acute episodes of old recurring pathologies.

 

ENDOCRINE ACTION:

This quality shows itself especially in obstetrical-gynecological pathologies. It has been observed: an increase in the gonadrotopin synthesis, in the follicle-stimulating hormone, an increase in the tubes contractions, epithelial hyperplasia on the uterine mucous membrane glands, menstrual period regularisation. These results clearly show a regulator and activator effect.   

Furthermore, the reduction in free radicals is proved, especially in those patients who are treated with mud baths. Thermal therapy is useful for the prevention of cellular degenerative phenomena connected to the ageing process and other pathologies.

 

IMMUNE SYSTEM STIMULATION:

According to different studies, thermal stress (induced by mud-therapy) is in conjunction with the variations of the b-endorphins plasma level. B-endorphines are brain peptide and have a powerful action similar to the one of the morphine. They seem to play an important role in response to the stress, especially because they appear to be involved in the endogenous reception of pain, in its regulation and maybe in the mediation of anesthetic effects. Moreover, it has been proved a relation between the reduction in the “pain” symphtom and the increase in b-endorphines after the mud baths therapy.

Having said that, mud-bath therapy seems to determine the production of some substances, such as b-endorphines, that show a firm connection both with the immune system and with the endocrine system.
